Let’s talk about keeping your skin radiant and breakout-free before and after your workout!   It’s all about nailing your pre and post-workout skincare routine!  

I haven’t always had the best skincare habits.  I’ve gone from sleeping in my makeup to a million-step skincare routine.  I’ve done it all.  But after going through a long skincare journey, understanding my skin and now owning my own facial bar, I can honestly say it really doesn’t have to be complicated!  Here are a few tips to a simple but very effective skincare routine for everyone who lives an active lifestyle.

Pre-Workout Skincare Routine:

  1. Cleanse:
    • Give your face a quick wash with a gentle cleanser to clear away dirt and makeup. No one wants clogged pores!
  2. Lightweight Moisturizer:
    • Follow up with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to hydrate without causing breakouts
  3. Sunscreen: 
    • Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable (I use an EltaMD tinted sunscreen that gives me a little bonus coverage and color), even if you are just driving to and from the gym!
  4. Avoid Heavy Makeup:
    • If possible, avoid makeup during a workout, as it can mix with sweat and clog pores. If you want a little more coverage, use a tinted moisturizer, SPF or light BB cream ;)


During your workout:

  1. Use a Clean Towel: 
    • Gently pat sweat off with a clean, soft towel during the workout. Avoid wiping aggressively so you don’t irritate your skin.
  2. Keep Hair Off Face: 
    • Pull  your hair back to prevent oils and dirt from transferring to your skin.
  3. Stay Hydrated: 
    • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out :)

This regimen helps keep skin clean, clear, and glowing while minimizing the chances of post-workout breakouts or irritation.


Post-sweat sesh:

  1. Cleanse:
    • It’s cleanse time again! Clean off the workout sweat, any oils and bacteria.  Remember, a double cleanse is always better than one :)
    • Got oily or acne-prone skin? Look for cleansers or toners with salicylic acid to help clear pores.
  2. Hydrate:
    •  Add a hydrating serum (look for one with hyaluronic acid) to keep your skin plump and glowing, then lock it in with a lightweight moisturizer. Bonus points if it’s got salicylic acid to keep breakouts at bay. 
  3. Sunscreen
    • As always, protect your skin you’ve worked so hard to take care of!  Use an SPF of 30 or higher :)
